Camden Council have partnered with Co-Laboratories to bring forward affordable, quality lab space for small and early-stage bio startups looking to take the next big step in their growth journey. In mid 2021, Camden Council was supported by Inner Circle Consulting to identify operators for vacant space in Cedar Way Industrial Estate, close to the transport and tech hub of Kings Cross Over the next five years, this work will bring currently empty units back into use, support new jobs and upskilling local people, and build on the momentum of London’s innovative Knowledge Quarter. There is a critical shortage of lab start-up space across London, threatening the city’s economic competitiveness and stifling job growth. Now, this new development will address the space shortage and also provide affordable lab space for companies that are in their first phases of growth. The space will support over 30 biotech starts up, deliver 360 hours of community benefit every year, and have programmes with local schools to promote STEM and provide pathways to encourage the local communities and women into the industry.

Laura Brightman is the Founder and CEO of Co-Laboratories, a company setting up affordable, quality lab space for small and early-stage bio startups. They will offer affordable, flexible, and good quality space for small startups which can be scaled to other parts of London and the UK. In addition to spaces lab space and bench rental, Co-Laboratories will also offer training and support to businesses looking to set up their own lab. Co-Laboratories are currently raising funds to invest £1.6m to transform the units, with works expected to start on the first phase in Q3 2022 and completion by Q42022. Cedar Way Industrial Estate is located in London’s Knowledge Quarter, is home to a cluster of renowned academic, cultural, research, scientific and media organisations.
